This is a VERY good book! It has great description and the action doesn't stop! It is a bit of a challenge, as the fact that many of the words are complicated and are used a lot. Some even most adults don't know! I recommend it to all fantasy lovers! |

Oh, yes. This would be an OK book. WOULD BE, if it weren't for the fact that every word, every turn in the plot, every IDEA was masterfully plagiarized from another, better writer- Anne McCaffrey, Robin McKinley, J.R.R. Tolkien....Let me see... A boy who learns to ride a dragon, and who is somewhat "chosen" by the dragon, and maintains a telepathic link with the aforementioned dragon. Sounds EXACTLY like McCaffrey. F'nor, maybe? F'lar? No, folks, it's Christopher Paolini. Like his infantile character, (who, despite being well into his teenage years, fails to demonstrate ANY complex emotion befitting his age) he is high in the sky on a nutty dragon- Paolini's dragon representing his ill-conceived idea that we readers will lap up any archaic- sounding Cinderella story (I hear there is a sequel- euurrrghh), even if this story is the cheap copy of many, much better, ORIGINAL novels. Like his dragon, Paolini's conceptions about how a novel is written are of an unknown and unjustifiable origin, hideously monstrous, and bound to get shot down someday. One can only hope that, when his euphoria is dissipating and he is brought down to earth, he can pull himself together and write something halfway decent. Preferably something that isn't along the exact same plot lines as LOTR (saving the world from a cruel ruler? In a manner remarkably like Frodo? With a wizened teacher who is a cross between Gandalf and Obi-Wan Kenobi? Need I mention the beastly Orc-like creatures swarming the land?) And, if it isn't asking too much, maybe a book that doesn't completely plagiarize Tolkien's elves and dwarves? Paolini's are almost exactly identical to those in LOTR, except notably less believable. Not that the main protagonist himself is believable- that kid's emotions are about as simplified as that eight-year old that I babysat once- given, the eight-year-old didn't experience lust- but the other feelings seemed incredibly parallel. As a teenager, I can tell you that life gets more complex than that. To conclude, I would say that this book is an insult to dragons everywhere, and it's popularity has only served to undermine my belief in the convictions of the American Public. For crying out loud, man, if you want a Cinderella Fantasy story, re-read Harry Potter, and don't waste your time on Eragon.

I agree with explode-a-hippie in the fact that pretty much everything in the story came from other much better books, but Eragon was still a fun read
p.s. I really don't think they should make it into a movie |

I think this book was OK. It did copy Tolkien and Lucas quite a lot, but I thought that there were at least one or two original ideas in it. For example, has anyone here ever heard of a creature that is called a Shade, the result of a man being controlled by the evil spirits he called upon? However, I didn't have much affection for Eragon's character, his only emotions seem to be pretty much anger, grief, and lust, so far. I hope that, as the books change, his personality will change too. |

this book is good but i agree with explode-a-hippie, this book has many plagiarized ideas however explode-a-hippie, considering that he started writing it when he was 17 i think it is farly good, the movie turns it into a bad book (understatement of the century) but the book is fairly readable material by the way La fille de francaise, the name may be original but a shade is exactly like the nazgul, or black riders of The lord of the rings. eragon is much more of a pigheaded dolt in the movie but his character could be a little more understanding, how ever, imagine how it would be if your uncle, but basicly your father was killed, and even though we know saphira is right, (saphira, there’s an original name!) i bet he was pretty mad. Then he is swept off into saving a country he doesn’t even know about, explode-a-hippie, i think that you should examine more closely how much painstaking work went into those THREE YEARS that christopher worked on eragon, while it may not be the next lord of the rings or harry potter this book is a remarkable achievement for a 17-20 year old man in today’s world, bravo christopher paolini! |

I can't put -, but is an -5 for me. A Raz'zac is only a Draghkar and a Fade combined. The Shade is only when a Forsaken (they call themselves Chosen) uses The True Power and start going insane, the 13 Forsworn are only simpler versions of the 13 Forsaken, Eragon is only a weaker Rand. Everything is a simpeler form of The Wheel of Time, The Lord of the Rings, and StarWars. If the characters from Eragon I just named off were put up against their original versions they would lose, and the origanal characters wouldn't even brake a sweat. |

I fully agree with most everything that explode-a-hippie said, with one addition: Look at the plot of Eragon. Look at the plot of Star Wars: A New Hope. See any similarities? This also applies to the sequal and The Empire Strikes Back. |

i have completly changed my mind! this is a really long boring book that you really have to force your self to read! if you want to have fun, read the twilight series. You will be bored to death when you read Eragon and i only read it because i had to for school, and the movie...well it wasn't as bad but it was still lame! |

Sure he was 15 when he wrote it, but really...I can believe that. Plot stolen from anne mcaffrey and a new hope, wizened teacher stolen from Lotr, and assorted bits, pieces and characters taken almost directly from the Wheel of Time. I mean, does he think that no one will notice the correlation between 13 Forsaken, badass badguys sworn to the service of a Dark Lord, who were once good magic users, and 13 Forsworn, who are pretty much the same thing? |
